Secularizing the Faith: Canadian Protestant Clergy and the Crisis of Belief, 1850-1940
Published in Paperback by Univ of Toronto Pr (August, 1992)
Author: David B. Marshall
Average review score:

Troubling Truth The Church Must Listen To
I was very surprised to find how readable David Marshall is in this treatise. I am a historian by training as well as temperment. This book has the ring of truth all the way from front to back cover. It is in no way church or christian bashing. The author has done a masterful job of showing how far down the church has come from the days of the Puritans and Quakers that founded both Canada and the United States. I admire his scolarship. Mr. Marshall has shown that the dominant consumer culture created in the 1800's has so seeped into the church that it has lost it's cultural dominance, if not significance.

Do not mistake me. I am a devoted follower of the Lord Jesus. I am a Christian all the way. But, I am also aware that there has been a cancer growing in the church for some time. David Marshall shows the reader the beginnings of the lump of cancer (leven) through the near death of the patient. From 1840 to 1940 he has shown (in the Canadian Church) the church giving up it's biblical mandates for social ones. He demonstrates how the church leaders desired more that their churches remain relevent than Christ-like. Everywhere the church leaders turned during that hundred years they were challenged with culture on a scale not seen in church history. But, instead of relying on that which is transendent, they leaned towards the secular gospel to try and attract more people to their particular denominations.

It became a war of ideology, not theology. They mistakenly believed that numbers meant success (sounds just like many T.V. evangelists today). They attempted to create programs and special classes in their colleges to deal with science and the new literary criticism coming out of Germany. They had to show that the bible could be explained in light of evolutionary theory. Mr. Marshall shows how all of these aspects of their change stunted the growth of the Canadian church, but also may have lowered it to cultural insignificance in the present day.

I liked this book for the truths it portrays. I do not like having to admit to "MY" church having given up it's place in society because it lost it's belief in a transendant G-d. I shudder to think how many people have been inoculated with Christianity, never to have anything to do with it again when they see the shallowness of it. I see many preachers today living out the logical conclusions of a secularized church. They are all over the television. For whatever reason, they are still chosing to preach a social gospel, versus the one that is in the bible.

I do have a bias against the T.V. preachers. (Especially the ones on the Trinity Broadcasting Network) I think Mr. Marshall shows us in his study of Canadian clergy from 1840 to 1940 that a great wrong has been done to the church by its leaders and I say that this wrong can easily be seen on television today.

This is a must read book for people looking for the real church and the real Christ. I do not know whether David Marshall is a christian or not, but he has done a great service to the whole North American church. I know I have sounded hyperbolic. But, I believe we live in a time when such work as this must be read and understood.

Selden Lindsey U.S. Deputy Marshall

The life of a forgotten western hero
This is a facinating account about one of the forgotten figures in old west history.I bought this book out of curiosity and found that I couldn't put it down untill I was finished. I began the book prepared to disbelieve what was written, especialy when I realized it was written by the grandson of Lindsey. My fears were soon laid to rest as I found McCullough to be an honest and entertaining historian. The death of Bill Dalton and the facts he presents to support his version of the famous outlaws death are impressive. In the end I found myself wishing for two things. The first is that Lindsey's earlier years driving cattle, hunting bufallo, anf facing the Comanche were better detailed. the second is that I could have met the remarkable man.

Self Psychology and Diagnostic Assessment: Identifying Selfobject Functions Through Psychological Testing (Personality and Clinical Psychology Series)
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (March, 1999)
Author: Marshall L. Silverstein
Average review score:

Excellent book on self psychology & psychological assessment
Noted psychologist and researcher, Dr. Marshall Silverstein has written an extraordinary book on psychological assessment. Through the lens of Kohut's self psychology, Dr. Silverstein blends the complex theory of self psychology with content analysis on the Rorschach and other projective psychological tests. His overview of Kohut's theory itself stands alone as perhaps the clearest summary of these concepts in the literature. His application of these concepts to psychological assessment opens new vistas of compassionate interpretation the underlying dynamics of what has often been called 'narcissistic wounding' though what Silverstein more correctly refers to as damage in selfobject functioning. His book includes two chapters where he presents in detail two cases complete with the original psychological assessment responses, which allows the reader a rare look into the mind of a very astute and compassionate clinician. I recommend this book highly.

Self to Soul: A Vision of Psychology and Spirituality
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (December, 1994)
Author: Judy Marshall
Average review score:

A Valuable Book
This is a valuable, but unusual book. While discussing many of the familiar concepts in psychology and spirituality, it is a new and provocative perspective that definitely made me think of myself in new ways and affected me on many levels. Because there is so much to really think about and digest, I could not read this book in one or even several sittings (but considered this a good thing). Sometimes it provoked questions that made me angry. Sometimes I felt soothed or calmed by reading it. It definitely challenges some of the ideas of popular psychology and brings expanded meaning to the concenpts of a sense of self versus soul and the spiritual meaning in relationships. I found myself wanting to discuss the material with others.

Nice Book
I reccomend this book specially for those people who don't know anything about Taj Mahal...the greatest invention (architecture) of Mughals (Muslim Emporeres)...this book tells you about the History of Taj Mahal, which was built by Mughal emporer (Shah Jahan) for his wife...it tells us the story of undying love of the Emporer Shah Jahan for his wife...Taj Mahal (the one & only true symbol of love) was built by Emporer Shah Jahan (Shah Jahan means "king of the world")...& Shah Jehan truely was King of the world & King of the loving hearts...he & other Muslim emporers (Mughals) built a lot of architecure in India & Pakistan region...(most of their architecture is mosques) but Taj Mahal is the one which got famous (maybe because of the romantic history behind it)...but Shah Jehan (creator of the Taj Mahal & other wonderful architecture had a miserable end)..he was seized & imprisoned by his own son..in a basement...from where he could see the Taj Mahal..but he was not allowed to go there..to touch his own piece of architecture...what an end to the person who made the one & only true symbol of love Taj Mahal :( & for those who don't know Shah Jehan had plans to build another Mahal (Mahal means palace) which was suppose to be all Black Marble architecture...although he was not allowed to do that because he was imprisoned by his son..but I think we all can visualize how could have that Black Marble palace look like.

Mystical Anglian fen country
I read this book hoping that it would give me a glimpse into the workings and way of life of Anglian fen country in Britain.

From the onset one is transported into the world of Fan and William Burbage and the close-knit community of Old Swithinford. A delightful mix of passions, scandals, friendship and village gossip envelops the people of East Anglia. A final surprise awaits both the community and the reader alike with the arrival of a newcomer. A sequel to a Nest of Magpies this book is a true gem...transporting one into a world now almost forgotten to us in the 21st centuary.

Starts the creative juices flowing!
If you're interest in decorating and design leans toward funky, stylish, modern interiors, this is a book for you. I had some ideas circulating in back of my mind about the environment I'd like to create, but needed some help in putting it into motion. This book did help. I find the colors used in a funky interior cheerful and invigorating. You can find new ideas for old, uninteresting pieces of furniture just by painting them enlivening colors, adding casters, and saving yourself money in the long run. I look forward to more from this author!

Sim Games Series
As a teacher and youth minister, the Simulation Games series (books 1-4) are excellent resources. Most of the games are fun and applicable to life and can be used for kids 7-18. You have to expand on the breakdown sessionS but they bring up excellent discussion points and the students learn and have fun at the same time. I have used this series for 10 years and would not do without them.
